Nonetheless, I followed that priest’s advice, and from that day included in my prayers, fanciful as it felt, the People of God in, well, wherever it would be. My Diocese of Portsmouth is packed with wonderful, lively parishes and covers a large area – from the Channel Islands all the way up to South Oxfordshire – meaning that I could never really be sure how things would pan out. What I had not imagined was that Bishop Philip would ask to meet me whilst he was visiting Rome in the spring, and that he would ask me to spend a year, including my transitional diaconate, working as an Assistant Chaplain at Fisher House. Every church or chapel seemed to be associated with at least four or five saints. Likewise, I realise that Cambridge is a place of immeasurable historical and cultural richness, and that we, too, are surrounded by the lives of great saints: St Simon Stock, St John Fisher, the Martyrs of the University, and many more.
