1000 metres below the sea’s surface, it is almost completely dark. However, among some of the fish that venture down that deep are those like the lanternfish that bring their own light. When we think about thinking, it is difficult to avoid the mention of light – when someone is highly intelligent, we describe them as being bright, thoughtful people are reflective, and when we come to understand something, we might say we’ve had an illuminating experience. The light of reason is the greatest natural gift we possess, and it distinguishes us from all the other animals on the earth. Yet sometimes we can be frightened to use this gift.",[],{"_key":180,"_type":162,"children":181,"markDefs":186,"style":170},"3f0ffeba63ac",[182],{"_key":183,"_type":166,"marks":184,"text":185},"d54a39aa4cd1",[],"I remember when I was a maths student at Trinity in the 1990s, and back then I spent many long hours using this natural light of reason to grapple with highly abstract mathematical concepts. But when it came to theology, I had the intellectual engagement of a seven-year-old. I used to tell myself “let the theologians stick to what they are good at, and I’ll stick to what I’m good at.” However, I think the real reason I never engaged with theology is that I was frightened to think about it. I hoped science and theology were entirely independent of each other, but I feared they might contradict each other, and if they did, I would lose what little faith I had. But thankfully, by the grace of God, I overcame this fear.",[],{"_key":188,"_type":162,"children":189,"markDefs":194,"style":170},"1d5f88bb3973",[190],{"_key":191,"_type":166,"marks":192,"text":193},"d49810e2089e",[],"God truly loves us, and the light of reason is the greatest natural gift He has given us. Once I realized this, I stopped being frightened and I began to see theology as an exercise in love. When Jesus was asked by the Pharisees what is the great commandment, he replied “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Loving God with our minds surely means we are being commanded to think about God and how His creation relates to Him.",[],{"_key":196,"_type":162,"children":197,"markDefs":202,"style":170},"92305747d4f5",[198],{"_key":199,"_type":166,"marks":200,"text":201},"c9da716878f4",[],"And so for this Michaelmas term, I have begun a science and theology group at Fisher House: the Lanternfish. We shall meet on Mondays at 8 pm, from 12 October. Like the Lanternfish, we shine with a special kind of natural light. But when we encounter the mystery of God, His presence to us can seem like darkness. It is not that there is any real darkness in God, but only that when we encounter His brilliant luminosity it is too overpowering for our minds to see anything at all. Yet God invites us to shine our natural light in His presence. We do not see God in His divinity, but we do see Him in His humanity in Jesus Christ, and the light of Christ raises up our minds so that the way we see reality is transformed.",[],{"_key":204,"_type":162,"children":205,"markDefs":210,"style":170},"72448ca64dca",[206],{"_key":207,"_type":166,"marks":208,"text":209},"12b3c0d37c4c",[],"Although science and theology have their own autonomy, they nevertheless interact with one another in fascinating ways.
