It sits by the Rhine, in a region know for its vineyards, beer making – and chemical plants.  Though only one third the size of Cambridge, Speyer has the largest Romanesque cathedral in the world. He is already busy with preparations to celebrate the cathedral’s one thousandth anniversary in 2030. Its vast interior, dominated by pillars of great height and girth, is mostly undecorated, except for a series of paintings of the Nazarene School telling the story of the life of Our Lady, and a large and highly coloured statue of the Madonna and Child. The usual practice of the Church is to chant them at the end of Compline (Night Prayer) but it is a great thing that, through the Chaplaincy, generations of students have been introduced to these beautiful hymns.
