Gilbey Music Scholarships

Fisher House, the Roman Catholic chaplaincy to Cambridge University, announces the creation of Gilbey Scholarhips in music, endowed by the Gilbey Fund, to ensure the current high standard of music is maintained.

The Gilbey Organ Scholar will be expected to play each Sunday in term at the 9.00am Latin Mass and at weekly rehearsals, and be available for other occasional events, notably the Fisher Mass. Applicants do not have to be Catholics, but must have sympathy for, and a willingness to engage with, Catholic liturgy. Applicants from within the existing College organ scholar community should gain approval from the Director of Music at their College before applying.
Candidates for the scholarship will be interviewed by the Directors of Music, and, as necessary, the Chaplain and the Organist. The Scholarship is worth £300 pa.

Fisher House has two choirs which sing each Sunday in term: the Schola Cantorum at 9.00am, and the Chapel Choir at 11.00am. The repertoires overlap, although the Schola Cantorum concentrates on the Latin Catholic tradition, while the Chapel Choir sings a wider range of polyphony and modern compositions.
The members of the choir are all volunteers drawn from the student body. They commit to singing at Mass and a rehearsal each week during term. Fisher House is offering eight scholarships, each of £100 pa, for each of the voices (SATB) for both choirs. The scholars must be undergraduates or graduates, ideally but not necessarily Catholic, who will commit to singing at weekly Mass in term time, and other specified events, such as the Fisher Mass.
Candidates can audition for either choir, and will be interviewed by the Directors of Music.
