Praying Together

Pictures of Pope Leo and King Charles praying together in the Sistine Chapel is a reminder that though the differences between Catholics and Anglicans are real and, at times, profound, we are united in our belief that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God and our Saviour. This shared faith is to be celebrated and, wherever possible, deepened.

Praying with another is an experience of a type of intimacy. And Our Lord promised that when two or three gathered in His name, He would be there among them (Matthew 18.20). Sadly, our different understandings of the Eucharist mean that the greatest of prayers cannot be, at present, a celebration of unity. Deo Volente, our shared discomfort regarding this will help us not to become comfortable in our disunity.

However, a wonderful way for Catholics at the University to pray with their fellow Christians is at Evensong in the college chapels. These particularly beautiful Liturgies in Cambridge are a privilege to enjoy and share. Communal prayer at the end of the day helps the chapels, in addition to Fisher House, to become for us treasured places of prayer. And, of course, through the Liturgy of the Ordinariate, Evensong has now its own place within the worship of the Catholic Church.
